The Culture Behind Locatrix’s Purpose to Protect Lives Through Preparedness

Locatrix is an Australian tech company using digital mapping and emergency preparedness software to help organisations keep people safer inside complex buildings.

Their purpose is simple: protecting lives through preparedness. Locatrix gives organisations a clearer way to understand their buildings, prepare their people and make critical information available when it is needed most.

Through PlanStudio® , PlanSafe®  and ESP, the team connects accurate digital floor plans, site-specific emergency training and secure building information for emergency services. Together, those tools create one source of truth for emergency preparedness.

Today, more than 144,000 active building floor plans sit within the platform, over 185 million square metres have been mapped and hundreds of thousands of people have been trained. More than a third of the ASX Top 50 are also safer today through Locatrix technology.

The ambition reaches much further. By 2035, Locatrix wants to help 100 million people stay safe by becoming the global standard in indoor floor plan mapping and emergency preparedness.

Earlier this year, Locatrix was named a winner of the Culture 100 Awards, which recognise Australia’s most thriving companies to work for. After reviewing more than 5,000 companies and surveying over 20,000 employees, Locatrix stood out for building a culture where every team member is trusted to improve work that has a direct connection to public safety.

Purpose runs closely through the employee experience. A developer is helping improve emergency readiness through the software they build. Someone working with customers is helping organisations become better prepared. Locatrix wants people to understand the real-world outcome behind their work, not only the task in front of them.

CEO Scott Jackson captures that connection clearly: “We’re a close-knit, values-led team that believes in trust, learning, openness and backing each other.” He describes Locatrix as a place where people have real ownership and the freedom to grow, while staying connected to the responsibility of giving people the right evacuation plans when they need them most.

Ownership matters because Locatrix wants people to challenge assumptions and test ideas. Working in safety-critical environments means innovation needs judgement behind it, so employees are encouraged to take thoughtful risks, learn quickly and remain accountable for the outcome.

One of the values that captures that approach is Less Fear, More Heart. Locatrix wants people to have the confidence to try something better, while knowing that mistakes should become opportunities to learn. That creates room for experimentation without losing the responsibility that comes with compliance-led work.

Learning continues beyond experimentation. People Development Plans help employees understand where they want to grow, while skills-gap analysis and training investment give them a practical route forward. Leadership development and structured adoption of new technology also help the team keep building capability as Locatrix evolves.

Scott Jackson has an ambitious measure for whether that culture is working: “I want our people to say ‘Locatrix is the best place I’ve ever worked’. Great businesses are groups of great people aligned to a common purpose.”

Listening helps keep that ambition grounded in the experience of the team. Monthly employee happiness surveys consistently average between eight and nine out of ten, while All Hands updates and regular conversations give people visibility into where Locatrix is going and how their work directly contributes. Many employees have stayed for five, ten and even fifteen years, giving the team deep experience to build on as new people join.

People who thrive at Locatrix are comfortable taking the initiative when the path is not completely mapped out. They bring curiosity to problems, use customer insight to test their thinking and take responsibility for moving work forward.

Collaboration is just as important. Locatrix wants people who can work across teams and share responsibility for the result, because improving emergency preparedness depends on different areas of expertise coming together around the same purpose.

Commercial growth and social impact are also expected to stay connected. Locatrix wants customer value and community benefit to reinforce one another as the company scales. Providing its Emergency Services Platform to emergency services at no cost is one example of that purpose extending beyond a commercial relationship.

Recognition through the Culture 100 Awards reflects the workplace Locatrix has built since 2008 around a mission with clear human consequences. Across thousands of companies considered and tens of thousands of employee voices gathered, Locatrix stood out for giving people the trust to improve how the company works while keeping everyone connected to why the work exists.

As Locatrix works towards helping 100 million people stay safe by 2035, the culture will remain closely tied to that purpose. The goal is to keep building a team where people can take ownership, keep improving and know that the work they do ultimately helps others be better prepared when it matters most.
