Sleep impacts everything: our health, mood, work, relationships, and the ability to be the parent, leader, athlete, or person you want to be. Yet 1 in 3 adults gets poor quality sleep, whilst 51% are frustrated with their nightly rest. When sleep is insufficient, focus drops, performance suffers, and health declines. The implications reach far beyond feeling tired.

In 2017, four UC Berkeley neuroscientists - Dr. Matthew Walker, Dr. Robert Knight, Dr. Rich Ivry, and Dr. Ram Gurumoorthy - set out on a mission to transform how we sleep. Over eight years, they built technology that combines clinically validated neuroscience with AI to treat sleep issues through personalized intervention. Backed by thousands of nights of data and peer-reviewed research, Somnee was born: a first-of-its-kind sleep wearable that goes beyond tracking sleep to actually improve your brain's natural sleep ability, night after night.

As Dr. Matthew Walker puts it: "Sleep is the most important thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day."

This year, the Impact One Awards named Somnee Impact Product of the Year. After reviewing over 21,000 company applications, what made Somnee stand out? Taking a scientific approach to solving a universal problem that affects 1 in 3 adults.

The team spent years building sleep lab technology into something people could actually use at home. When someone tells them Somnee helped them fall asleep faster or feel like themselves again after years of struggle, it validates the work. Many on the team have dealt with sleep issues themselves or watched family members struggle. They're solving a problem they understand intimately.

The technology works like a sleep gym for your brain. Just like lifting weights strengthens muscles, Somnee strengthens your brain's optimal sleep pathways. Through gentle, personalized electrical wavelengths, it synchronizes brain-wide sleep activity to help you sleep faster, longer, and deeper, night after night. Dynamic AI/ML-powered personalization delivers gentle electrical signals tailored to your brain, nudging brainwaves into their optimal rhythms for deeper, more restorative rest.

The results prove the approach works. The technology is 2x more effective than CBT-i, 4x more effective than melatonin, and 1.5x more effective than sleeping pills like Ambien. Non-addictive, brain-fog free, and supporting improved sleep quality at the level of brainwaves. Phone-free use with all-night comfort whilst providing lab-grade sleep reports featuring 40x the data of top trackers.

Here's where it gets interesting. Leading up to this year, they made a decision that prioritized long-term impact over short-term wins by completely overhauling their flagship product. Industrial design, comfort, data accuracy, and manufacturing infrastructure all got rebuilt from the ground up.

They chose to invest in a complete redesign of the headband, rebuild their roadmap, and shift manufacturing location for greater quality control and clinical reliability. This meant delays and added complexity, but it ensured they could deliver a product that meets the standard their technology deserves.

They also committed to parallel pathing a regulatory submission to move beyond the consumer space. This adds even more complexity, but long term it means bringing their technology to an even wider group of people. Sleep deprivation and insomnia is a massive global health problem that deserves rigorously evaluated solutions.

The technology adapts over time. Early sessions map your unique brain patterns using EEG+ and proprietary AI. Middle sessions build and refine your personalized neurostimulation. By session 22, your AI Sleep Coach is fully personalized and evolves your stimulation as your sleep needs change.

The team includes proven leaders from Fitbit, Google, Apple, and Samsung who understand how to build consumer technology that people actually use. With 200,000+ nights of data collected, they're learning and improving constantly.

Looking ahead, they're redefining what people expect from sleep technology. The vision goes beyond just better sleep tonight. They're building technology that shifts the entire paradigm from passive tracking to active, personalized intervention that strengthens the brain's ability to rest, recover, and heal over time. Introducing their second-generation device to market whilst building out their clinical roadmap and expanding industry partnerships means bringing this technology to broader populations who need it most.

Sleep is foundational to everything we all do. When you fundamentally improve how people sleep, you transform cognitive health, performance, and longevity. That's the bigger picture: making peak performance sleep the new normal and fundamentally transforming the human experience through technology that helps the brain do what it's designed to do naturally.
